Amazon is going to open its first manufacturing line in India. The e-commerce giant plans to manufacture electronics products in partnership with Foxconn-owned Cloud Network Technology which is an India-based subsidiary of the Taiwanese electronics giant. The company will start its manufacturing activity with production of television streaming devices.
"Delighted to share that soon Amazon will commence manufacturing of electronics products like FireTV stick in India.
We welcome Amazon’s decision to set up a manufacturing line in Chennai, as it will enhance domestic production capacities, and create jobs as well," said Union minister for electronics and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad.
"This further reiterates our commitment to ‘Make in India’, contributing directly to the local economy, creating jobs & boosting Indian innovation," said Amit Agarwal, SVP and Country Head, Amazon India.
According to Amazon, the Chennai line will be capable of producing hundreds of thousands of devices every year, starting with the Fire TV line of streaming devices. The announcement comes a year after Amazon said it would begin investing as much as $1 billion in local Indian businesses.
In 2020 Amazon announced the ‘Local Shops on Amazon’, a program that enables retailers and local shops to be Atmanirbhar, and benefit from selling online. "We have over 22,000 neighborhood stores registered across the country gathering additional footfalls through their online presence and furthering their earning potential by acting as pickup points, logistics partners, and experience centers for e-commerce," said the company.
