In the recent breaking development, Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL), co-promoted by Adani Group and TotalEnergies, added that it has commenced a green hydrogen production and blending pilot project. ATGL will leverage cutting-edge technologies to blend green hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas for over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad on account of this project.
GH2 is made by electrolysis of water with renewable energy-generated power. Hydrogen blending emits less CO2 than burning gas while providing the same heating capacity, as per businesstoday.
ATGL's pilot project for blending GH2 with natural gas is anticipated to begin operations in fiscal year 2024-25. Subject to regulatory permissions, the project plans to gradually raise the ratio of GH2 in the mixed gas to 8% or higher.
After the pilot is completed successfully, ATGL intends to progressively increase the provision of GH2-blended fuel to broader sections of Ahmedabad and other places under its license. This staggered strategy will allow for a regulated and well-monitored GH2 blending deployment, assuring optimal performance and safety.
Based on studies, blending up to 8% GH2 with natural gas can result in up to a 4% reduction in emissions.
Suresh P Manglani, executive director and CEO of Adani Total Gas Ltd., said, "We are fully committed towards building an environmentally sustainable operation and this project represents our ongoing dedication towards national infrastructure building for India to become energy independent by 2047."
"This project will reduce our carbon footprint and by investing in such innovative projects, we are actively contributing to the evolution of the industry and driving progress in sustainable energy solutions," he added.
