The ground-breaking ceremony of Tata Group and CG Power chip plants marked a significant milestone for India's semiconductor industry. Union Minister for Communications and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted key details during the event, emphasizing India's ambition to become a prominent player in the global chip ecosystem.
According to Vaishnaw, the first semiconductor chips from Tata Electronics' Dholera plant are expected to be rolled out in December 2026. Additionally, chips from the Micron plant are slated to be available by December 2024. The Dholera plant will focus on manufacturing chips in the 28, 50, and 55-nanometer nodes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three chip plants, including the country's first high-tech chip manufacturing facility of Tata Electronics. This plant, established in collaboration with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, will be located in Dholera's special industrial region. With a capacity to produce 50,000 wafers per month and an investment of Rs 91,000 crore, the facility will receive 50 percent of the capital expenditure from the Central Government on a pari passu basis. The chips produced at this facility will serve various sectors, including electric vehicles (EV), telecom, defense, automotive, consumer electronics, display, and power electronics.
Semiconductor technology plays a foundational role in modern life, powering a wide range of devices and systems, from household appliances to transportation and communication infrastructure.
In addition to the Dholera plant, Tata Electronics will also establish an assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam. This facility, built with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, is expected to create over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. It will focus on developing indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, with a capacity of 48 million chips per day. Importantly, this will be India's first semiconductor unit in the Northeast region, contributing to the country's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
