In the past couple of years, the casting manufacturing industry in India has grown in leaps and bounds and has become one of the most important segments in India’s manufacturing landscape. Currently, India is among the top three global producers of castings backed by its robust foundry sector. Growth of the industry is fuelled by rising demand from major sectors such as automotive, infrastructure, agriculture, aerospace, and renewable energy. However, the automotive industry still accounts for more the majority of the total demand for castings. Apart from the increased demand for lightweight, high strength components, casting manufacturers are seeing increased demand because of rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and government’s push towards ‘Make in India.’ In addition, cast iron and steel castings, necessary for heavy machinery and construction equipment, have been driven by the demand for infrastructure projects, such as road construction, railways and smart city developments.
The advent of technology and increasing use of automation and digital tools have greatly contributed to the increase in production capabilities and consequent increase in product quality and cost efficiency. The growth of the industry is also due to innovations in materials such as the development of new alloy composition and use of recycled metals to satisfy the sustainability concerns and meet stringent quality. The production linked incentive (PLI) scheme by the Indian government, as well as the push to source locally, has further boosted the expansion of casting manufacturers. The industry has seen steady increases in export volumes, particularly to the United States and Europe.
