Bringing U.S. Innovation To India

India's strategic position, and the gigantic consumer market, has been making the nation an attractive destination for manufacturers based in the United States to set up their operation. Since these companies also tend to be able to leverage Indian labour force’s skills, they often set up production facilities, joint ventures or sourcing hubs targeting India’s growing industrial sector. The main reason for the shift to India is the country’s favourable economic climate, which includes government incentives for foreign direct investment (FDI), in areas such as automotive, technology and consumer goods. Secondly, India’s robust infrastructure including well developed transportation networks and modern industrial parks allows manufacturers to optimize supply chain logistics and cut operational costs.

These manufacturers establish local facilities mostly for domestic consumption and also to serve regional markets in many cases. As an important export hub for American companies, India's strategic location in Asia makes it an easy jump off for other rapidly developing markets. India acts as a manufacturing base for these companies as they also use the country to navigate trade barriers and tariffs as international trade dynamics change. American manufacturers in India have created jobs and advanced technology in the country. More often than not, they bring advanced manufacturing processes, managerial expertise and product innovation that can be a godsend to local industries. Furthermore, there is an increase in the skill development programs run by many U.S. firms for local employees, which further improves the technical capabilities of the workforce, and thirdly, the efforts of American companies to work with Indian suppliers make the entire value chain more robust.
