Starting the BMR Group in 1991, he set out to revolutionize the industry by introducing reforms that promoted farmer welfare and sustainability of the marine environment.
Dr. Rao is notably called 'The Father Of Vannamei Farming in India' as he pioneered the introduction of a new species of shrimp, PenaeusL-Vannamie to the Indian Aquaculture Industry. The 6-year pilot project between 2003-2009 played a crucial role in defining the path of success for BMR Group. However, Dr. Rao succeeded in obtaining necessary governmental permissions and successfully established L-Vannamie Shrimp for commercial farming. By successfully obtaining positive results, the company was able to promote prosperity among the aqua farmers and stakeholders. The success of this project with the contributions of Dr. BMR, introduced rural aquaculture farmers to international markets, opening more revenues for the industry that led to a meteoric rise in Indian shrimp production and BMR to establish India as the second-largest exporter of Shrimp.

BMR’s major product lines include Shrimp Feed, Shrimp Seed, Frozen Shrimp, Aqua Healthcare Products and Brood Stock multiplication. In addition, they also offer Frozen Raw Shrimp head-on &headless, PD Tail On/Off, Easy-Peel, Breaded Shrimp, Nobashi, and Butterfly Shrimp to name a few.

Through strong partnerships with France and Mexico-based aquaculture companies like Blue Genetics and GroupoMahr, BMR Group is able to procure genetically bred high-quality Shrimp Brood Stock. Within India, BMR’s infrastructure consists a whopping 350 hectares shrimp farms along with 400 hectares of contract farming. The group also has 13 bio-secured hatcheries spread over Chennai to Odisha. These state-of-the-art facilities are capable of producing the highest quality pathogen-free Shrimp seeds. Having a lot of demand in the international market, BMR has partnered with some of the biggest Logistics companies including Maersk Line India, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Wan Hai Line India, and many more; to oversee exports.
