In a bid to curb power theft, the Rajasthan government has planned to install smart electricity meters in all the houses in the state of Rajasthan. The work of installing smart meters for 14.3 million connection holders will begin soon and around Rs 9700 crore is likely to be spent on this said one of the senior electricity department officials.
A significant impact of smart meters includes its ability of improving energy distribution efficiency. Ankit Hakhu, Director at CRISIL Ratings, highlights the potential capex opportunity of Rs 1.5 lakh crore in India's power distribution sector through the SMNP. He said, "Since smart meters are prepaid, their roll-out will improve the collection efficiency of discoms. There will also be support in the form of discoms. There will also be support in the form of grants of up to Rs 1,350 per smart meter from the Centre, which will improve the financial profile of discoms.”
