Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and KPIT Technologies have entered into an agreement to accelerate hydrogen-based mobility initiatives in Kerala, India.
The agreement, officially signed at the Global Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Summit in Kochi, falls under India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and seeks to build a clean energy ecosystem for public transport. As per this initiative, BPCL will install hydrogen fueling stations in Kochi and Trivandrum to facilitate hydrogen-fueled bus trials between the two cities.
This pilot project will be a major milestone in testing the feasibility of hydrogen as a sustainable fuel for public transport in India and contribute to a cleaner mobility solution.
"Hydrogen-powered mobility represents the future of sustainable transportation. Through this collaboration, we are making significant progress in developing a hydrogen ecosystem in India, offering clean, efficient, and locally manufactured solutions for public transport," stated Shri G. Krishnakumar, Chairman & Managing Director of BPCL.
The project focuses on testing the performance of fuel cell buses driven by hydrogen under Kerala's multifaceted climate, characterized by high humidity, temperature fluctuations, and heavy precipitation. The results obtained will play a critical role in fine-tuning fuel cell technology and fine-tuning it for large-scale commercial use.
BPCL's hydrogen pumps will generate green hydrogen of high purity to learn the operational side of hydrogen fuel dispensing as a step to establishing a nation-wide hydrogen mobility ecosystem.
