With air pollution levels escalating to hazardous levels in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), the demand for air purifiers and masks has surged significantly, according to city traders. The Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to an alarming 484 on Monday, categorizing the air as 'severe plus,' marking the worst reading this season, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The surge in pollution-related health concerns isn't limited to purifiers. A chemist in East Delhi observed that November sales of pediatric nebulisers and low-dose inhalers have already exceeded totals from the past 10 months combined, signaling an alarming increase in parents seeking respiratory aids for children.
This widespread demand reflects the growing anxiety among residents over the deteriorating air quality and its impact on health.
Residents struggling to cope with the toxic air are increasingly turning to protective measures. Vijendra Mohan, owner of Air Expert India in Indirapuram, reported a twofold increase in air purifier sales, now selling around 40 units daily, compared to 20 units earlier. He added that inquiries have surged to over 150 calls daily, reflecting the growing urgency among households to combat indoor pollution.
Similarly, Rakesh Singh, who runs a Blueair dealership in Pushp Vihar, noted a consistent rise in demand, with daily sales climbing from 10-12 units last month to 25 units now. In Vikaspuri, Ravi Kaushik of Airth Air Purifier Company revealed a 70% spike in sales since late October. He emphasized that homes near busy roads are particularly vulnerable to high pollutant levels, often resulting in respiratory issues, and credited advanced air purifiers for effectively mitigating these risks by filtering harmful particles.
