Ship management plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance of a ship by streamlining its operations, improving equipment and crew efficiency, and enhancing overall productivity. Ship management companies, acting on behalf of shipowners or charterers, oversee various aspects of ship management. This encompasses tasks such as the precise technical management of vessels, vessel registration, operational coordination, maintenance services, and crew management, among other responsibilities.
Gurukripa Marine Services (GKMSPL) is located in Mumbai, India's commercial hub and a central hub for the country's maritime trade and industry. Founded in 2012, GKMSPL is a rising company with the objective of delivering high-quality ship management services to ship owners, ultimately guaranteeing the efficient and profitable operation of the vessels under its supervision. Pratigya Tripathi, the CEO of Gurukripa Marine Services, has been a guiding force for the company, demonstrating remarkable skills and a deep commitment to effectively lead a ship management organization.
During a personal interview with our team, she openly discussed the inner workings of the organization, her upbringing, and how her career path has paved the way for her achievements.
Can you briefly outline your leadership experience in the marine industry and highlight your significant business milestones?
I have 15 years of experience in the shipping and marine industry. I worked for five years before establishing my own company, Cuba Marine Services, which has been successfully running for 11 years now. Currently, I own four Western shipowner companies, specializing in domain titles and reselling. In Mumbai, I manage three companies: Gurukul Marine Services, Lonja, and ATG Ship Management.
Our services include ship channelling, chartering, trading, and ship owning, and we hold a Recruitment Placement Services License (RPSL). I also have branch offices in Dubai and Istanbul. My involvement spans three companies, including Long Mind, where comprehensive services are offered. I hold the position of Managing Director across all three of my companies.
My first venture, Confirm Earnings and Sales, has been in operation since 2012 and focuses on recruitment within the merchant navy and the broader shipping industry, covering positions ranging from captains to general seafarers.
We also manage passenger vessels, with over 96 percent of them under our supervision. In my second company, Atlanta Ship Management, I own four vessels, while my current enterprise, Asia APJs Ship Management, is involved in ship chartering and shipbuilding. Additionally, I'm currently in the process of establishing the Guru Recon Marine Academy, set to launch in approximately two months. I oversee the foundation and documentation for this academy, which will be part of the Trust Charitable group. The necessary company formation and permissions have already been secured for this exciting new venture.
What has posed the greatest challenge in your business career to date, and what strategies did you employ to successfully address it?
In India, we operate over 300 personal companies, and many of them have established their client base, which comes with its fair share of challenges. Notably, one of the main hurdles is the substantial cost involved in recruiting vessels, with expenses ranging from 500 million to 1000 million per visit. It's essential to earn the trust of clients who are entrusting you with skilled personnel for their vessels.
Building these close relationships is a pivotal aspect of marketing. Additionally, fierce competition is a constant challenge, with over 250 companies in India engaged in vessel recruitment. Some of these companies evenave their own vessels or management entities. The drive to grow one's company in this competitive landscape is shared by all, and my company currently have over 1000 seafarers on board as part of our efforts to meet these challenges.
Each company have a management structure in place, but they have their unique approach or methods which work best for them
Could you describe the procedures and strategies you employ for managing your clients effectively?
The process involves a thorough examination of the company's credentials in India, specifically focusing on their authorisation for waste management. Additionally, we assess their proficiency in evaluating the quality of seafarers, including the number of skilled personnel they have on board. Moreover, we scrutinize their client portfolio to gauge their experience in the industry and how many satisfied clients they have served.
This scrutiny helps us determine the trustworthiness of the company as a potential partner. It's crucial because if a company can effectively manage its own ship, it implies it possesses the capabilities to manage other vessels, aligning with our objectives and reinforcing our confidence in collaborating with Indian maritime professionals.
What are the client's initial expectations when they approach your organization, and what procedures do you have in place to meet and exceed those expectations?
I'm actively engaged in marketing efforts, which involve regular trips, typically once or twice a month, to various countries such as the UK, USA, and Istanbul. During these visits, I establish connections with potential clients and visit their offices. In these interactions, I emphasize the exceptional quality of Indian seafarers.
I strive to build not just professional relationships but also genuine friendships with these clients. I take the time to explain the skill set and competence of our Indian seafarers, showcasing their capabilities. If the clients recognize the value and are convinced of the merits, they grant us the authorization to recruit for their vessels. In essence, my approach to marketing is a combination of building trust through personal connections and highlighting the prowess of our seafarers to secure partnerships in the maritime industry.
