The cutting tool industry is amidst a transformative phase, driven by groundbreaking advancements across various critical areas. The wave of progress and innovation has given rise to a new era of tooling technology, where precision, durability, customization, and sustainability take center stage. Led by H. V. Murali Shankar, OMICRON TOOL WORKS has been an integral part of these innovations, harnessing technological advancements to develop high-quality, specialized cutting tools. As the industry continues to grow, the company remains at the forefront, dedicated to providing top-tier solutions tailored for specific industrial applications.
Established in 1959, the company revolutionized metal cutting tools precisely when India was in the cusp of rapid industrialization. Under the visionary leadership of Late H. V. Shankaranarayana, OMICRON TOOL WORKS began as a small-scale venture with a focused vision. Initially manufacturing HSS Tool Bits, the company swiftly became a cornerstone supplier to both public and private industries, solidifying its position as a significant supplier to the Defense Industry. Moreover, its products found their way into international markets, making a mark with their quality and precision. Today, it is well into the second-generation leadership, being managed at present by H. V. Murali Shankar. Let’s hear more from the leader himself.
Take US THROUGH the evolution of OMICRON TOOL WORKS & your journey with the company over the years?
My journey, driven by passion and commitment, began alongside the Late H. V. Shankaranarayana’s vision. From 1982, while pursuing Mechanical Engineering, I embarked on a pivotal role at OMICRON TOOL WORKS, supporting my father in its helm. Joining formally in 1987 after completing my degree, my hands-on training, even during college, laid the foundation. Specializing in high-speed steel (HSS) and heat treatment techniques, training at BOEHLER BROS., Austria further honed my skills.
Under my father's mentorship, I inherited a free hand in managing the company, fostering the development of new, specialized cutting tools. Celebrating 25 years in 1984 marked a turning point, introducing niche products like HSS Spade Drills and Form-relieved Jig Boring tools, earning recognition in Heavy Engineering sectors.
Recognizing the industry's need for diversification and specialized tools, I led the charge towards product diversification, fostering crucial relationships with our valued customers.
When Shankaranarayana passed away in 1998, I stepped up to lead the company into its next chapter. A significant milestone came in 2009 with the introduction of our ‘OMICRON 50’ series, setting higher quality benchmarks and meeting global standards. 'OMICRON 50' series commemorated 50 years of HSS TOOLBITS, reflecting our relentless pursuit of quality and innovation. Crafting these tools from the finest High-Speed Steel, employing advanced heat treatment, set unparalleled quality standards, making OMICRON the best in tool bits, true to its logo. Our dedication to niche markets and our relentless pursuit of excellence in tool bits continue to drive us into our SEVENTH decade, positioning us as a hallmark of quality and distinction within the Indian engineering industry.
What are the most important business challenges that you face today in your current role? How do you overcome them?
The availability of cheaper alternatives is a consistent challenge. However, at OMICRON TOOL WORKS, educating clients about the importance of quality raw materials has mitigated this challenge. Over our 64-year journey, this commitment to quality inputs has been pivotal, ensuring our products surpass cheaper alternatives, allowing us to maintain our industry foothold and reputation.
What unique strategies or products differentiate the company in the highly competitive market of cutting tools?
Our strategy has always been about diversification and tailoring specialized tools for unique applications. This customer-centric approach has established robust relationships and brought recognition in a competitive landscape. Our niche products cater to various industries, ensuring our distinctiveness in the market.
Have a passion, business is definitely not a bed of roses & are subjected to ups & downs. So, ride the tide!
