Adani group has initiated the mixing of green hydrogen with natural gas for household cooking in certain areas of Ahmedabad to reduce emissions and achieve net-zero goals. Adani Total Gas Ltd, the city gas joint venture of the group with TotalEnergies, has begun mixing 2.2-2.3 percent of green hydrogen in piped natural gas supplies at Shantigram in Ahmedabad, as mentioned by the company.
Hydrogen produced using clean procedures is varied into natural gas pipelines, and the resultant mixtures are used for producing heat and power with reduced emissions related to using only natural gas. The company began making green hydrogen from wind or solar power, using electrolysis to segregate water into hydrogen and oxygen. This hydrogen is blended with natural gas that is being transmitted through pipelines to households and industries for cooking.
Adani-Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) mentioned, "This project will provide uninterrupted hydrogen-blended natural gas to 4,000 domestic and commercial consumers."
Currently, in Kawas, Surat district, Gujarat, state-owned power generator NTPC is providing households with green hydrogen blended natural gas. The government-owned gas company GAIL (India) Ltd is conducting a limited trial in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, to distribute CNG mixed with grey hydrogen.
The company plans to gradually raise the green hydrogen mix in natural gas to 5 percent, then to 8 percent, and expand distribution from Shantigram to other areas in Ahmedabad and later to other regions with a city gas permit.
"This achievement marks a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and transitioning to cleaner energy solutions. By blending hydrogen with natural gas, we are lowering greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy security, and supporting sustainable development," ATGL said.
An increased blend of up to 30 percent can be attained by altering the material grade and wall thickness of pipelines and equipment.
