Roshan Akthar Nalini BramhanapalliVishwanathan ATurning Waste into WattsWaste-to-Energy market in India is experiencing an admirable development, attributed to the pressing issue of managing wastes and ensuring energy security. Due to urbanization, industrialization, and population growth, the country is going through an increasing waste problem, which is identified by the unavailable infrastructure and the ineffective waste management practices. In this scenario, Waste-to-Energy technology stands as a key contributor for maintaining sustainable and environmentally positive waste management and energy generation strategies. One of the key factors that help the WtE market to grow is the renewed focus of the Indian government on environmental friendly development and renewable energy. The governments have taken the lead in creating the environments that allow investments in waste management systems, and the use of WtE technologies has been promoted. Regulatory bodies have also implemented policies for the creation of a favorable environment for the development of WtE projects. Also, landfilling itself has been shown to have negative environmental impact, intensified by the increasing public awareness regarding environmental conservation and alternative waste management solutions like waste-to-energy. Anaerobic digestion, incineration, and gasification are used by WtE facilities to turn organic waste into energy. Through this, the volume of waste going to landfills is reduced and the energy in the form of electricity, heat, or biogas is generated. In addition, the rising numbers of off-grid energy solutions and small-scale WtE technologies like biogas plants and community digesters prove to be the driving forces behind the increasing adoption rate of small-scale waste-to-energy systems. Local governments thereby can provide waste management services in addition to supporting rural electrification and socio-economic growth. In this issue, we acquaint you with the topcompanies from this field.
