This request sought exemption from the mandatory listing of 'upper layer' non-banking finance companies (NBFCs). Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, is exploring options such as transferring the holding in financial services company Tata Capital to another entity, which could be a key factor placing Tata Sons in the 'upper layer,' according to an executive familiar with the matter.Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran and a core team of executives have reportedly met with RBI governor Shaktikanta Das and other officials in recent weeks to discuss potential solutions. The RBI has taken a firm stance, as granting an exemption to Tata Sons might prompt similar requests from other corporate holding companies. Following the RBI's refusal, Tata Sons has sought advice from top legal and finance experts to find a resolution.The plan, if implemented, would require approval from Tata Trusts, the philanthropic trusts endowed by members of the Tata family that hold about 66 percent of Tata Sons. The Mistry family of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, which holds an 18.4% stake in Tata Sons, is another stakeholder. The relationship between Tata Sons and the Mistry family has been strained since the ousting of Cyrus Mistry as Tata Sons chairman in 2016. Tata Sons and the RBI have not commented on the matter. Shristi Infrastructure Development Corporation, a developer based in West Bengal, plans to invest Rs 4,000 crore in establishing a 1,000-acre township in Guwahati, Assam, as stated by Sahil Saharia, the company's CEO, to ET.Having already developed a township in Asansol, the company aims to expand its real estate footprint in cities like Jaipur, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Alibaug, and Sonepat. Land has already been finalized in Alibaug and Guwahati, with discussions in advanced stages for other cities.Saharia emphasized the benefits of township developments in tier two cities, noting their potential to enhance residents' quality of life through improved infrastructure, better roads, utilities, and public amenities like parks and community centers.The company's first township in Asansol, executed by Bengal Shristi Infrastructure Development Ltd, encompasses apartments, group housing, plots, bungalows, and a central business district. The central business district includes a shopping mall with a multiplex, an Odyssey club, a modern commercial block, and healthcare facilities.Saharia highlighted the potential of townships to attract investments, create job opportunities, and stimulate economic growth, ultimately providing residents with enhanced living conditions and employment options. The Shristinagar project in Asansol incorporates sustainable practices, promoting environmental well-being and urban development, fostering a sense of community among residents.
