4AUGUST 2024Redefining Strength with CompositesThe market for composite materials in India is currently undergoing a dynamic change due to the technological changes, demand for the product across various sectors and the favorable government policies. Originally, composites were mainly used in aerospace and defense industries; however, they are gradually being adopted in automotive, construction, and sports industries. Among the many drivers that have contributed to this evolution is the increased use of light weight material in the automotive industry to improve on the fuel efficiency and performance. Due to their high strength to weight ratio, composites are gradually finding their place in manufacturing body panels and structural parts. This shift is also backed by more stringent environmental policies governing emissions to the atmosphere which have forced manufacturers to look at more environmentally friendly materials. In construction industry, the application of composites is growing significantly because of their high durability, resistance to corrosion and easy maintenance. These materials are being used in infrastructural areas such as the bridges and buildings where the conventional material may not perform as well or is relatively expensive. The use of composites in the structural and aesthetic design of products and structures is likewise fueling their use. In addition, the government's focus on the "Make in India" campaign along with policies is helping in the development of complex manufacturing ecosystems. This is promoting both local and foreign investors to put up production facilities in the country hence promoting innovation as opposed to importation. In the current issue, we introduce you to the top companies in this segment.
