Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the government is planning to introduce an electric highway from Delhi to Jaipur. It will be reasonable to define an electric highway as the layout of a road or highway that involves forms of EV charging. Such highways normally consist of one or more charging stations or charging systems on the route required to support long-distance travel for owners of electric cars.
It is expected to be launched during the next seven-year perspective to advance the growth and establishment of electric mobility and facilitate the adoption of electric buses across the nation. On these e-highways, there will be charging facilities derived from green energy sources.
This is part of Vision 2030 – PM Public Transport Sewa program. With the developing routes of e-highways, there are expectations that corresponding stations for charging the cars would also be established causing more people to buy electric cars for their daily usage.
Last year, automakers sold 100,000 electric cars and failed to mark the figure of 100,000 fully. First-time buyers have been very careful in using purely electric vehicles for personal transport because of the following reasons: range of control, and lack of proper charging facilities in the country first and foremost. As a result, the consumers have looked at the EVs less as their first or even second car, or even third car.
Gadkari also pointed out that the government has plans to make India a global hub for biofuel production besides informing that the Centre is now working on a pilot project wherein an electric trolley bus is to be introduced in Nagpur and is likely to bring down ticket rates by at least 30 percent.
